The Lost Crocodilian Realm
A fully preserved Diplocynodon crocodile is a rare sight, but this Eocene fossil is nothing short of extraordinary. Its body outline is captured with remarkable clarity, the skin preserved in exquisite detail, an almost miraculous survival of time and circumstance. No restoration was needed; every contour and texture is original, prepared in flawless three-dimensional form. Once part of an old private collection, it was discovered roughly forty years ago. Today, finding another example of this quality borders on the impossible.
This Eocene crocodilian fossil belongs to the family Diplocynodontidae, a group of early alligatoroid crocodilians found exclusively in Europe. Their lineage stretches from the late Paleocene through the middle Miocene, painting a picture of a continent once rich with crocodyliform diversity. In fact, during the early Cenozoic, Europe harbored an exceptionally varied crocodilian fauna, in stark contrast to the continent today, where no native populations survive. Within this vanished bestiary, the genus Diplocynodon emerges as the most widespread and thoroughly documented, with twelve recognized species, including the hereby celebrated D. darwini, which remains an extremely rare complete specimen.
Glimpses into Ancient Behaviour
Like their modern relatives, ancient crocodylians likely practiced maternal care, guarding their eggs from the moment they were laid and continuing to protect their young after hatching. Although crocodilians and birds share a distant ancestor, scientists still debate how closely their parental behaviours are related. Yet the fossil record, from nests to rare associations of adults with eggs, offers tantalizing glimpses into the lives of these ancient guardians.
The World of the Messel Pit
Its story begins in the world-famous Messel Pit, a site that became a UNESCO World Heritage location in 1995. After industrial activity ceased, scientists descended upon its ancient oil shales, revealing a vault of prehistoric life. More than 51,000 fossils have since been unearthed there, plants, insects, birds, mammals, and reptiles, many preserved with lifelike fidelity. These specimens allow scientists to reconstruct the lush ecosystem that thrived in Messel some 48 million years ago. Among them, crocodilian remains like this one stand out for their completeness and their astonishing anatomical detail.
This specimen perfectly preserved and scarcely obtainable today, stands as both a scientific treasure and a deeply evocative window into the warm, thriving wetlands of Europe’s distant past.
